Yoga, Yoga Therapy, Health and Well Being:
Yoga addresses the body, mind, emotions, and spirit. There are numerous reported health benefits, including (but not limited to): lower blood pressure, slower pulse/heart and respiratory rate, one study shows a decrease in cholesterol, reduced pain (in some cases complete recovery from chronic pain) and fatigue, relief from depression and anxiety, greater joint mobility, decrease in arthritic symptoms, relief from insomnia, increased core strength, balance, stability and coordination, improved digestion and elimination, improved flexibility and range of motion, enlarged respiratory capacity, it opens energy channels and brings about a greater sense of grounding as well as feeling uplifted. When we experience being more in our true natural state the effect on our health can be truly amazing. We experience a state of relaxation and deep sense of well being.
In addition to the practice of yoga, and assisted yoga practices that trigger the relaxation response, at Beyond Postures yoga and yoga therapy are grounded in the yogic principle of ‘ahimsa’ or in western terms ‘the role of the empathic relationship’ as a potent healing agent. Research shows that over 60% of the healing benefit of any healing modality (eastern or western) is attributed to the relationship the client has with the practitioner. This relationship is crucial in the cutting-edge body-mind approach of Yoga Therapy for working with the mental and emotional component of disease, or simply working within a personal growth approach. In addition to yoga postures yoga fosters inner focusing, working with the observing self and self-reflection. This process can open up long held experiences of trauma and wounding. Yoga Therapy, thus, is more than the physiology and anatomy of well being - it is the work of the Self addressing deep questions in the nature of “Who am I?” and “What is my purpose?” This is the psycho-spiritual aspect of our human experience. Yoga is a psycho-spiritual science as well as a physical-anotomical science that has existed for well over 5000 years. The psycho-spiritual healing aspect addressed by Yoga Therapy includes a process for learning how to communicate with these aspects of ourselves through our bodies. Body dialoguing techniques can support this exploration and bring about profound self-transformation and movement toward self-realization. Within a context of understanding the healing dynamic of the client-practitioner relationship we can find the empathic reflection, mirroring, we need to move into a different relationship with the wounded aspects of ourself. The Yoga Therapist must move beyond a rigid witness position to also include the psychological holding space for a movement toward true healing to take place.
